THE CONCEPT
Mankind’s existence was brief, yet dramatic. Societal functions transformed people from a species that was controlled by their environment to a creature that dwells in their creation. The site of the Friesenhahn Cave highlights a stark contrast between a natural limestone sinkhole that has remained unchanged for thousands of years upon human intervention and the parody of the 21st century within the surrounding context.
The combination of space and site is uniquely blended to craft the human experience. Visitors resort to moving on foot as they enter the site and leave the car on which they are so dependent. A ramp traces the topography. As the natural grade continues to fall, the architecture catches the subject and lifts them into the initial structure.
